What are nouns?

 Nouns
are one of the most common "blocks" which are used to refer to people, animals, places, things, ideas, or events.

They encompass most of the words of a language.

They can be a/an:

💥Person 👩‍🦰 – The name for a person: Max, Julie, Catherine, etc.

💥Animal 🐕 – The name for an animal: dog, cat, cow, etc.

💥Place 🏙️– The name for a place: London, Australia, Canada, etc.

💥Thing 👟 – The name for a thing: bat, bell, chair, door, house, etc.

💥Idea 💭 – The name for an idea: devotion, superstition, happiness, etc.

Some examples of nouns that we can see are the following:

  • Alex is a wonderful player.
  • Sydney Lions is the team he plays for.
  • They had to ask for the VAR
  • Honesty is hard to find nowadays

Remember:

If a word starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) we put AN in front of it.

AN elephant. 🐘

If it starts with a consonant, we put A in front of it

A chair. 🪑

What Are Nouns?

Nouns represent:

people

  • city

Brief mention of other types of nouns

Common nouns:

The name for something which is common for many things, person, or places.

It encompasses a particular type of things, person, or places (for example: country, city…).

Proper nouns:

The name which refers only to a single person, place, or thing and there is no common name for it.

In written English, a proper noun always begins with capital letters (for example: Rivera, Agustin…).

Abstract noun:

A word for something that cannot be seen but is there.

It has no physical existence.

Generally, it refers to ideas, qualities, and conditions (for example: Truth, lies…).
