What are verbs?

They used to describe what someone or something is doing.

Along with nouns, verb a

re the main part of a sentence or phrase.

✨Verbs express what the person, animal, place, thing or concept does.✨

Without a verb, full thoughts can't be properly expressed, a verb can be a sentence by itself.

 

What is the man on the right doing?

  • He's standing
  • He's painting
  • He's smiling

Basic Forms of Verbs

There are six forms of verbs:

Base form:  Children play in the field.

Infinitive: Tell them not to play.

Past tense: They played football yesterday.

Past participle: I have eaten a burger.

Present participle: I saw them playing with him today.

Gerund: Swimming is the best experience.

How to recognize a verb?

One clue to help you recognize a verb is its location compared to the subject.

Verbs almost always come after a: Noun  --  Pronoun

Example: You write neatly in your notebook.
